7. Respected Principal Sir

, honourable teachers and my dear friends. Today, I, Ashish of Class XII-B, will speak on

the topic "Child Labour

Child labour typically refers to employment of children below a certain age in various organisations and

industries. This problem is more acute in developing countries than developed countries, primarily because of

reasons like poverty, low cost associated with children and lack of will power for implementation of labour laws.

Within developing countries, it is the unorganised sector like shoe-making, hand-made clothes, brick kilns,

bangle-making etc that have a higher percentage of child labour.

The more disturbing part of child labour is that children are forced to work in pathetic conditions and are often

maltreated. They are made to work for long hours, not given proper food, deprived of basic sanitation and often

exposed to hazardous materials and chemicals during the course of their work. This results in illness, injuries ar

at times even death of children. It also deprives the children of their childhood and right to basic education

In order to stop child labour, the government should work on strictly implementing labour laws and should

severely punish employers found guilty of employing children. Only then can we have a better future for the

1

children of this country.

Thank you

Or

Respected Judges, honourable teachers and dear friends, I am Priya and, I will speak in favour of the topic,

Women Should be Given More Opportunities for Achievement outside the Home'.

Feeling that women should only remain at home, do house-keeping and bring up children is, undoubtedly, an

absurd notion today It is not understood as to why people are so biased against women, notwithstanding the

fact that history is beset with the heroic feats performed by women. Had we confined women to the peripheries

of home, we would never have had achievers like Sarojini Naidu, Aishwarya Rai, Indira Gandhi, Lata

Mangeshkar, Kiran Bedi, Kalpana Chawla, Mary Kom, Mother Teresa, Arundhati Roy and many others. We

should never commit the mistake of considering the woman as the weaker sex. They might look physically

weaker than men, but they are mentally very strong.

Women can be a Sita or Savitri, but when the time comes, they can also be a Kali or Durga. She can do wonders

it given a chance. They should be allowed to attend schools or colleges, work in offices and elsewhere, and

explore the world of opportunities outside their homes. Moreover, men and women should be given equal rights

in society, which implies that women should be given more opportunities for achievement outside their homes.

Thank you!

3. We' refers to the human beings who are always thinking about their own progress and advancemente

(0) The poet wants us to do nothing as by doing nothing cur minds can be at peace and we would be able to

introspect and analyse our own actions

(1) The sadness being referred to arises due to the fact that people tail to understand themselves. They have no

time to introspect about their actions and their consequences

(w) A huge silence can help us achieve peace by enabling us to analyse ourselves and our actions, interrupting

the sadness of threatening ourselves with death

Or

0 The poem is 'Aunt Jennifer's Tigers' and the poet is Adrienne Rich

(6) Aunt Jennifer's death is symbolic of her complete submission to her suppression.

(1) No, society is not affected by Aunt Jennifer's death in any way

(iv) The significance of terrified hands' is that her hands are terrified even after her death Even death could not

liberate her from the chains of her mental suppression

. () In the poem, 'An Elementary School Classroom in a Slum, the hope for a better life in future compels the

slum children to adopt wrong means like stealing and other crimes to fulfil their dreams.

() Dr Sadao and his wife Hana brought the wounded man to their house and then Sadao operated on him and

saved his life. Hana washed him and served him when none of the servants wished to enter his room. Together,

they helped him survive. Dr Sadao finally helped him escape to safety

(III) The Champaran episode became a turning point in Gandhiji's lite because what began as an attempt to fight

injustice being waged against the helpless peasants later turned out to be Gandhiji's loud and clear

pronouncement that the Britishers could not order him about in his own country

(iv) The Maharaja was anxious to kill the hundredth tiger because a prediction was made by an astrologer at the

time of his birth that he will become a warrior of warriors, but his death will come from the tiger'. The

astrologer emphatically told him that he should be very careful with the hundredth tiger. So, he wanted to kill

this tiger to prove the prophecy wrong.

(W) The term 'scrounging for gold' means that the children who pick garbage sometimes find a currency note or

a silver coin while scrounging. Hence, they are happy to scrounge and consider garbage as a piece of

wonder

(vi) Franz did not want to attend school that day as he had not learnt the lesson on participles and feared that his

teacher was going to question him on this topic.

0. Our dreams are an integral part of our lives and without dreams, life will become dullTeenage is that phase in

one's life when one is preparing oneself to face the challenges of life Teenagers are still not acquainted with the

harsh realities of life. Much of their dream world is influenced by the movies and media, Teenagers see the

ordinary simple people like them making it big in just a span of 3 hours. They idolise their heroes and think that

achieving high in life is not difficult and hence, they start nurturing unrealistic dreams like Sophie.

It is important for us to dream high. If one doesn't dream one can never be successful in life. However, dreaming

the unachievable can be damaging to us as unfulfilment of these dreams can lead to depression or developing of

suicidal tendencies among teenagers. Dreams are certainly a part of life, but it not dealt with adequately, they may

prove to be extremely harmful

Or

'The Rattrap' tells us the story of a lonely peddler, who has nothing and has no one to call his own. He wanders

from place to place and is mistreated and mistrusted by the world. Then we come across the old crofter who

leads a solitary life and longs for company. He accords a warm reception to the peddler as he views him as

meone to talk to and pass a few lonely hours with

Similarly, the ironmaster shows his eagerness for the peddler's company mistaking him for an old acquaintance.

His wife is no more, his sons are abroad and he has no one but his daughter at home. He offers his hospitality to

the peddler as he wants suitable company to ward off his loneliness

Thus, the theme of loneliness and the need to bond with others is projected strongly in all the characters in the

story
